Education Fitouts and Refurbishments for Modern Teaching and Training Environments

Education Fitouts, Refurbishments and Building Upgrades

Airey Building Group is based in Varsity Lakes and delivers education fitouts across South East Queensland, including the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and into the Northern Rivers. We work with universities and higher education providers, and our education projects include work across three levels of Bond University’s Institute of Health & Sport, covering new fitouts, refurbishments and building upgrades. The work at Bond University covered:

The Bond University works were carried out on a working campus, so we planned access, noise and safety around students, staff and teaching activities. On the Level 1 upgrade, we programmed the works to limit disruption to teaching spaces and pedestrian traffic.

The Airey Building Group Fitout Process

We agree the scope, the cost and the timing of every education project through a three-step pre-construction process before education facility fitouts begin. Where the facility stays in use during the works, we also plan how construction will fit around teaching and the people in the building.

For learning space fitouts, we start by understanding how the facility will be used, what the project needs to achieve and the condition of the existing space. We also talk through operational considerations, such as who will be using the building during the works, along with your timeframe and budget.

We develop the design and scope around your agreed requirements, covering layout, services, finishes and any structural or acoustic requirements. You then receive an itemised Scope of Works and cost breakdown, so you can see exactly what is included and what it costs.

We review the Scope of Works with you and make any final adjustments. Once you approve it, the project moves into construction.

Education Fitout Case Studies

Across three levels of the Bond University Institute of Health & Sport, we upgraded a high-performance training centre, fitted out more than 650m² of clinical education space and refurbished a clinical training facility. Each project was planned around a working campus, from an upgrade completed while the university remained operational to a refurbishment finished within the semester break.

Planning an Education Fitout

Before design begins on a new fitout or education facility refurbishment, work with the facility’s management team to understand three key requirements: how each space will be used, how the works will fit around teaching, and the acoustic, services and specialist requirements of each room. When these are agreed early, the Scope of Works and the cost breakdown include them from the start.

Flexible Learning & Training Spaces

In education fitouts on the Gold Coast, Brisbane or into the Northern Rivers, flexible spaces let one room suit different teaching methods, class sizes and hands-on training requirements. On the Level 3 refurbishment at Bond University, we modified and reinstated the existing operable wall system, so the teaching spaces can be opened into large collaborative areas or divided into smaller classrooms.

Working Within Operational Facilities

Students, staff and teaching schedules all affect how and when construction can happen on campus. We plan access routes, noise, safety around the work area and the timing of each stage, and we schedule works into semester breaks where the scope allows. For the Level 1 upgrade at Bond University, we coordinated the works closely with campus operations.

Acoustics, Services & Specialist Requirements

Consultation rooms, lecture rooms and offices each need a different level of acoustic separation and privacy, and we confirm structural requirements, electrical and data services, accessibility and any specialist teaching or clinical requirements during design. For the Level 1 upgrade at Bond University, the new glazing used 12.76mm acoustic glass.

Education Fitout FAQs

We complete fitouts, refurbishments and building upgrades for universities and higher education providers. Our completed work includes teaching and learning spaces, clinical education and training facilities, consultation rooms, flexible learning spaces, offices and staff areas, and structural and acoustic upgrades. Contact our team to discuss a project outside that list.

Yes. At Bond University, we refurbished an existing education and clinical training facility on Level 3 and carried out an acoustic and structural upgrade of the High Performance Training Centre on Level 1. Our university refurbishments cover existing teaching spaces, clinical areas, offices and staff areas, alongside new fitouts.

Yes, in some circumstances. The Level 1 upgrade at Bond University went ahead while the university remained open, with the works planned around teaching spaces and foot traffic on campus. Whether university fitouts can run alongside teaching depends on the scope and location of the works, so we work through access, noise, safety and staging with you during the consultation.

Yes, where the scope fits within the break. The Level 3 education and clinical training facility refurbishment at Bond University was delivered during the university semester break. We talk through your teaching schedule and semester dates during the consultation, along with the timeframe for the project.

Start with how the facility will be used and who will be in the building during the works. Then weigh the teaching and training spaces you need, access, noise and safety, the teaching calendar, acoustics and privacy, services, accessibility and any specialist requirements against your budget and timeframe.

Most education fitouts take 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the project. At Bond University, the Level 1 upgrade took 5 weeks and the Level 2 fitout took 10 weeks, while the Level 3 refurbishment was completed within the semester break.

Before construction begins, allow up to 2 days for test fit and space planning, 1 to 2 days for your review and 7 to 10 days for detailed design. The construction quotation then takes 1 to 2 weeks, and certification and authority approvals take up to 3 weeks.

Airey Building Group delivers education fitouts across South East Queensland, including the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and into the Northern Rivers. Areas we service include Burleigh Heads, Upper Coomera, Helensvale and Ormeau.
